Visits Montana to Discuss Missouri Breaks National Monument
July 21st Event, “Protecting the Past to Invest in Our Future”
will discuss the creation and preservation of the Monument
and the opportunities it presents for Montana
Great Falls (July 8, 2005): Award winning writer, historian, and documentary filmmaker Dayton Duncan will visit Montana later this month to discuss the creation and preservation of the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument and the opportunities it presents for future generations of Montanans.
Duncan will give a public address, entitled, “Protecting the Past to Invest in Our Future,” on Thursday, July 21st at 7:30pm in the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center in Great Falls. The event is free and open to the public. Mayor Randy Gray and Lewis and Clark scholar and writer Stephenie Ambrose Tubbs will introduce Duncan.
Duncan’s address will talk about his lifelong fascination with the Journey of the Corps of Discovery and his role, with Stephen Ambrose, in the creation and preservation of the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument in northcentral Montana.
The event is hosted by the Northern Rockies Office of the National Parks Conservation Association and Friends of the Missouri Breaks Monument. Following the program we will celebrate the 5th Anniversary of the National Landscape Conservation System with a birthday cake and other refreshments.

BACKGROUND: Dayton Duncan, award-winning writer and documentary filmmaker, is the author of nine books, including: Out West: A Journey Through Lewis & Clark's America which chronicles his retracing of the Lewis and Clark trail; it was a finalist for the Western Writers of America's Spur Award. Miles From Nowhere: In Search of the American Frontier examines the current conditions, history, and people of the most sparsely settled counties in the United States. Lewis & Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery, published in November 1997. Duncan’s most recent work is Scenes of Visionary Enchantment: Reflections on Lewis & Clark, a collection of essays released in conjunction with the Lewis and Clark bicentennial. One of those essays is devoted to Duncan’s love of the White Cliffs of the Missouri River.
