Quote of the Week
Great Falls Tribune - July 7, 2001

"This is the goose that can lay golden eggs into perpetuity."

Lewistown City Commissioner Marv Hoffer said that as the commission went on record in unanimous (5-0 with two abstaining) support of monument status for the Upper Missouri River Breaks.

"We want to give other people courage and show some leadership," said Brad Parrish, chairman of the commission. "We wanted to say, 'It's time to get going, folks.'"

In January, 377,346 acres around the Missouri River Breaks were set aside as a national monument.

In a contradictory and short-sighted move, several counties, including Fergus, have approved a joint resolution against the designation.

Lewistown commissioners said the monument is a "natural gift" that, with proper stewardship, can be preserved for generations. We couldn't agree more.
