About the Friends
We believe that national monument designation is the best way to protect the Missouri River Breaks and ensure that future generations are able to enjoy this historic landscape. Our goal is to bring together citizens and business owners who care about the Missouri River Breaks National Monument and recognize its potential as an economic, recreational, and cultural asset to Montana.
The Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument is a natural, historic, and cultural symbol of the American West that must be protected for all generations.
The Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument designation will stimulate local economies by attracting visitors who wish to experience the nationally recognized wild and remote landscape of the West. In addition, the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial will bring thousands of new visitors to a historically-rich river corridor and landscape that has remained virtually unchanged in two hundred years.
The Monument designation protects hunting, fishing, and recreational opportunities as well as abundant wildlife habitat and wide open vistas. Because the Monument protects these values forever, it provides the foundation upon which we can build strong, stable communities and vibrant local economies.
We, the Friends of the Missouri Breaks Monument, call upon our congressional delegation, our state elected officials, and state and federal land management agencies to protect the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument against attempts to decrease or alter the boundaries of the Monument or otherwise impair the Monument's unique historic, cultural, and natural landscape values.
The Friends of the Missouri Breaks Monument are business people, hunters, anglers, hikers, river users, outfitters, farmers, ranchers, recreationists-your neighbors from across our great state. We are working to inform others about the Monument's values and what the national monument can do for the small towns and communities of central Montana. Through active resource planning, public education, and effective policy-making we intend to protect the many natural, cultural, and historical assets of this special place for generations to come.
